Chapter X: Special State of Emergency

Fyodor was the first to speak, "Well, if the army is taking care of this I think we should board up here. We're all familiar with the town and know how to get out if we have to. I don't know what places'll be open or where we can get anything to build up the defenses here."
"Open? Hell I imagine we'll have to salvage, loot, or whatever the news calls it anymore. It wasn't a problem during Katrina apparently, and I say that this is worse. If the police have a problem with it they can go through the zombies to arrest me.", yelled an obviously distressed Joseph.
"So its okay to be a criminal now? Just because this is a bad situation doesn't mean we have the right to steal. We can't let society fall apart or we'll all die.", yelled Tina. At this point the intelligible conversation ends and the next half-hour was filled with yelling. Preserving their values or their defenses, this was their debate. To possibly risk their lives in order to preserve society, or to scrounge for survival. This had been a debate that had been reargued throughout history, if a common good was worth more than several lives.
When the debate had ended they had barely reached a decision in a 7-5 vote. A group of three would take Joseph's truck and take the backroads to Bloomington. They would try to find an open store but if they couldn't they would have to take more drastic steps. The back way wasn't ideal, but it was sure to be clearer. The group consisted of the only three people who were willing to leave: Joseph, Charlie, and Fyodor. They would keep in touch via two walkie-talkies, which Charlie had purchased from a military surplus store. Splitting up was dangerous but they agreed that it would be better to be vulnerable while the crisis was still in a relatively calm state. The team that stayed behind would gather up as much non-perishable food and water that they could.
The trio did their farewell and headed outside the safety of the Community Center. They looked around half-expecting the dead to be at their doorstep, but found the town as they had left it last night. They headed north up Pine Street towards the school and Joseph's house. Despite the complete lack of traffic they were still compelled to walk along the sidewalk and still turned their heads left then right at each corner. Charlie and Joseph both had hunting rifles as they had experience shooting, whilst Fyodor still carried the ax in case one managed to close in. They said little as they walked because they were too busy listening for any sign of survivors, or those who had failed to survive and were now pursuing them. They finally turned down the only street standing between them and the school.
