A Council of Men The Council looked very similar to the one from Indayes's vision, but was not entirely the same. All of the men wore long, bright, and elegant robes, several wore spectacles, and all were in their later years. The room was entirely empty except for the Council when Indayes had entered and seemed much larger to him in person. The man who had obviously taken the title of High Magistrate sat slightly higher than the rest of the men was the first to speak, "You have allied yourself with a demon lord, and yet you do not seek to usurp us. You have a lot to explain to us, for I do not see a reason to spare you from the gallows. They may not be the ones who presently hunt us, but we have gone to war with them before. I am merely working to protect the citizens under me, and I see a threat, not salvation, before me. Normally, you would have been killed long before you reached the lands surrounding the capital, but our current situation has forced us to seek unconventional solutions. Tell us of your purpose and necessity so that we may decide if your cause is a worthy one to join." "The Lord of Hellfire has lead his soldiers in the most recent chapter of the ongoing brood war between the two types of demons. Long ago the beasts sought to destroy their masters, and sparked a war with the loyal demons. We have see that they are fiercely loyal and will seek any means to destroy their enemy. Why should we be so arrogant to turn away their aide. We can only help each other through this pact, and we have seen that their intentions are noble. Else they would let our villages fall as they amassed their legions. We need to change our means of fighting if we are to drive the beasts from our lands, and our new allies have examined the tactics of the beasts and know how to conquer them. If we join them in this great hunt than we will free ourselves and our new brethren. Make your choice wisely. We shall either be remembered as honor-bound allies or as a mere distraction to beasts. Their claws may never be able to tear this city asunder, but how long can one city stand as a country? We can no longer hide our selves from the other races, it is our time to ride with them and banish our common enemies."
"You make a solid case, but we cannot throw about our resources based on whims. We fill have our deliberations and make a decision. Leave our chambers for now, and we shall call you when the time has come." Indayes strode out of the room with a sense of pride and fear. He knew the council was made of reasonable men, but reasonable men with old grudges might as well lack reason altogether. For several hours Indayes walked about the room that held the gateway to the council chambers reading scrolls, looking at ancient artifacts, and appreciating the art. It was another hour or so before he saw the Council's portal return to life. Indayes stood and walked towards it, but before he could enter the council had begun to exit. They were walking towards a balcony which overlooked Tama-Karai, and as they walked past him one of th members spoke in a low voice, "You have done well. Follow us to see the first steps towards a new future." Indayes smiled as he followed the Council out towards a balcony with a majestic view of the Pearl of Humanity. The spot had been used by many to announce the fate of humanity, and the current speaker sought to continue that tradition. He spoke a few words that Indayes had never heard before but he could understand their meaning. It was not the language he was accustomed to, but he understood that the High Magistrate had commanded his voice to boom across the city. "Children of the Empire, listen unto me! For too long we have sat back in the affairs of the world. We secluded ourselves to protect ourselves, but that age is over. We have been weakened by our latest wars and have become the prey of demons. In our darkest hour we can no longer refuse the races of Verimoore. We must swear allegiances with those we once swore at. I too desire that we may become free by our own actions, but I also desire that we be free without bloodshed. Blood will still stain the grounds during our fight for freedom, but if we band together with those who hate our enemies as much as we do than the price of freedom will not be as great. Many will pay the ultimate price, but it is necessary. I refuse to become a mere page in another's history text, and in my right as High Magistrate I recognize the offers made by the Demon Lord Malayos, and his herald Indayes." Add us on:
